Southwestern College campus in National City offers a Microenterprise Family Childcare Training Program for low-to-middle income individuals to learn how to set up their own home-based licensed childcare businesses. As a requirement of the program, participants committed to volunteer 20 hours of community service (maximum 10 hours at one organization's department). All participants speak Spanish, and only a handful are also proficient in English. They are adults, the majority are women, and range in age from their 20' to 60's. Their goal is to open their own home-based childcare business, so volunteer work related to this (childcare, helping in classrooms, etc.) would especially be favorable, but is not a requirement. The type of volunteer work that we would especially encourage would involve helping at community events (fundraisers, fairs, etc.) and other work involving interaction with people. Cleaning facilities is not the kind of volunteer work we are seeking. If you are interested in receiving volunteers, either for a specific community event or for assistance at your agency, please complete the "Volunteer Request Form" and FAX it to: (619) 216-6678. Current volunteer opportunities will be shared with participants on a regular basis during the semester, but obviously the sooner you announce your volunteer need, the better.
