Know Your Rights During a Disaster
Friday, October 7, 2011, from 1:00-3:00pm at the San Diego County Library- El Cajon Branch (201 E. Douglas, El Cajon CA 92020) the American Civil Liberties Union, and Center for Social Advocacy, in partnership with the El Cajon Collaborative, will be hosting a workshop to teach community members how to support and advocate for themselves and their neighbors during a disaster. El Cajon Fire Safety and Career Expo
Saturday, October 8, 2011, is the date of El Cajon's Fire Safety & Career Expo. Fire season is upon us. Bring your whole family out to this FREE event. This event will feature Polic K-9 Demonstration, Face Painting by Rapid Tatts, Kid's Workshop by Home Depot, Core Child/ Teen Self-Defense Demonstration, Fire Safety Inflatable House & Trailer, Career Opportunity info, Senior Resource Section, and Disaster Preparedness & Safety Displays. East County Citizens Academy
Tuesday, October 25, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Sheriff's Alpine Station (2751 Alpine Boulevard, Alpine), get a free tour of the Sheriff's Alpine Station and its 911 center. Learn about the Sheriff's Bomb/Arson Unit, Border Suppression Team, Crime Analysis and its role in solving crimes to keep you safe. You will also meet Sheriff's Deputies, Detectives, Crime Prevention Specialists, Senior Volunteer Patrol members and a representative from the District Attorney's Office. The Sheriff's K-9 Unit will also give a demonstration at the parking lot. Certificates will be presented during the graduation ceremony at the end of the class. FREE ACTIVITIES
10th Annual Kids Care Fest
Saturday September 24th, 2011 from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm at Briercrest Park & Grossmont Healthcare District (9001 Wakarusa Street, La Mesa, 91942). Kids Care Fest is a fun and free interactive family event sponsored by Grossmont Healthcare District, La Mesa Park & Recreation Foundation and the City of La Mesa. There will be more than 50 exhibits designed for families with children to receive free health screenings from healthcare professionals and free medical information from pediatricians, a pharmacist and a dermatologist. Additional free activities include: sports activities, face painting, Rady's Safety Store, water safety information, organic produce information, astro & bungee jumps, pony rides, La Mesa's Fire and Police Departments, Lemon Grove's Fire Safety Trailer and the many non profit organizations will all have interactive displays. Each child receives a goodie bag to put their hands-on activities in when visiting the booths.  Children receive a free reading book and lunch whiles supplies last.

San Diego CA 92115) will host a "safari to health”. The College Avenue Center is helping seniors to navigate through the “jungle” & find the information needed. Local health care services, vendors and providers will be on site to guide you on the path to a healthier lifestyle.
Seasonal Flu Shots will be provided by Sharp Grossmont Senior Resource Center for seniors. The shots are recommended for older adults aged 60 and over, and adults with chronic illness that impacts their immune systems. $2.00 suggested donation

Reporting to the Associate Director, the Intake Coordinator is a full-time position that processes all service inquiries and completes client intakes over the telephone. The Intake Coordinator works closely with clinical staff to ensure that intakes are appropriately assigned for follow-up. The Intake Coordinator appropriately logs all intakes performed and service inquiries addressed. Environmental Protection Agency Announces Sub-Grant Program
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is announcing the availability of $1.5 million in grant funding for the Environmental Education Sub-grants Program for 2011. The purpose of this competitive grant program is to increase environmental awareness and stewardship. This funding will provide participants in EE grant-funded projects with the skills necessary to make informed environmental decisions and take responsible actions toward the environment.  EPA
expects to award one (1) grant for approximately $150,000 in each of EPA’s ten (10) Regions and will accept applications until November 8, 2011.

Audubon Society Seeks Volunteers for Important Bird Area Citizen Science Program
Help Mission Bay’s sensitive species and habitats by being a volunteer citizen scientist!
•Creating and carrying out field studies
•Monitoring key indicators of habitat health
•Conducting threat assessments

Commitment: Volunteers are required to attend an orientation/training session in November 2011 and commit to volunteering a minimum of 5 hours/month through September 2012.
Qualifications: Interest in birds, conservation, natural history, science, and outdoor or community projects, and intergenerational experiences (as this project may involve some
collaboration with high school student volunteers). Volunteers should enjoy working with people and spending time outdoors. We welcome all interested volunteers age 55 and up!
