FREE DISASTER/ EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS ACTIVITIES Know Your Rights During a Disaster Friday, October 7, 2011, from 1:00-3:00pm at the San Diego County Library- El Cajon Branch (201 E. Douglas, El Cajon CA 92020) the American Civil Liberties Union, and Center for Social Advocacy, in partnership with the El Cajon Collaborative, will be hosting a workshop to teach community members how to support and advocate for themselves and their neighbors during a disaster. East County Citizens Academy Tuesday, October 25, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Sheriff's Alpine Station (2751 Alpine Boulevard, Alpine), get a free tour of the Sheriff's Alpine Station and its 911 center. Learn about the Sheriff's Bomb/Arson Unit, Border Suppression Team, Crime Analysis and its role in solving crimes to keep you safe. You will also meet Sheriff's Deputies, Detectives, Crime Prevention Specialists, Senior Volunteer Patrol members and a representative from the District Attorney's Office. The Sheriff's K-9 Unit will also give a demonstration at the parking lot. Certificates will be presented during the graduation ceremony at the end of the class. FREE ACTIVITIES 10th Annual Kids Care Fest Saturday September 24th, 2011 from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm at Briercrest Park & Grossmont Healthcare District (9001 Wakarusa Street, La Mesa, 91942). Kids Care Fest is a fun and free interactive family event sponsored by Grossmont Healthcare District, La Mesa Park & Recreation Foundation and the City of La Mesa. There will be more than 50 exhibits designed for families with children to receive free health screenings from healthcare professionals and free medical information from pediatricians, a pharmacist and a dermatologist. Additional free activities include: sports activities, face painting, Rady's Safety Store, water safety information, organic produce information, astro & bungee jumps, pony rides, La Mesa's Fire and Police Departments, Lemon Grove's Fire Safety Trailer and the many non profit organizations will all have interactive displays. The purpose of this competitive grant program is to increase environmental awareness and stewardship. This funding will provide participants in EE grant-funded projects with the skills necessary to make informed environmental decisions and take responsible actions toward the environment. EPA expects to award one (1) grant for approximately $150,000 in each of EPA’s ten (10) Regions and will accept applications until November 8, 2011.
