San Diego Law Library Presents Justice and Science: Trail and Triumphs of DNA Evidence                                                                         
Forensic DNA testing technologies have presented the criminal justice system with powerful and unique tools in the solution of a crime. This 1 MCLE hour presentation will cover the development and use of new DNA technologies both in the investigation and proof of current offenses and to examine older cases in which inmates have frequently served lengthy terms in prisons or penitentiaries. Currently, in excess of 270 inmates in the United States have been exonerated by modern DNA analysis of samples seized prior to the availability of DNA testing.

Coordinated Care Initiative (CCI) announcement
It was announced on April 4, 2012, that San Diego County has been selected as one of the four counties to participate in the proposed three-year demonstration. Under the proposed demonstration, dual eligible beneficiaries in San Diego County will have a choice of enrolling in Care 1st, Community Health Group, Health Net or Molina health plans. Under the proposed demonstration, these health plans would be responsible for delivering all Medicare and Medi-Cal benefits and services, including medical care, long-term care, and social supports that help dual eligible beneficiaries maintain their health and live at home as long as possible. As you all know, San Diego County has had a long-standing commitment to developing an integrated care delivery system for seniors and persons with disabilities. Through the LTCIP, we have worked together for over 12 years to envision a better system of care for dual eligible beneficiaries in our County. Your ongoing involvement in the LTCIP to provide feedback on program operations, benefits, access to services, adequacy of grievance processes, and other consumer protections is essential to the success of the Dual Eligible Demonstration in San Diego. While an Advisory Group comprised of consumers and key stakeholders is being formed specifically around the Dual Eligible Demonstration and will be meeting regularly, the LTCIP stakeholder meetings will continue to be held quarterly. We welcome your active participation in the LTCIP in the coming months.

EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES
The GIRLS! CAMERA! ACTION! project (GCA)
Starting on May 23rd, 2012, the GIRLS! CAMERA! ACTION! project (GCA), the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) and Montgomery Middle School and Break the Cycle, join efforts to create awareness about teen dating violence through a Youth Violence Prevention Program. This project is a pioneer program for MOPA and one of the few stop motion animation Public Service Announcement (PSA) production educational programs in the city. With youth participants from the Linda Vista, San Diego, CA, social awareness, leadership training, PSA production and exhibition, this year’s program is expected to be a tremendous success. Funding and donations will support Girls! Camera! Action! efforts to programs development and PSA’s production.
The project will be part of an 18 week session program. Girls! Camera! Action! and MOPA are also working together to host a free guided tour in September, 2012.
At the museum tour, girls and their mothers will share information on issues concerning teen dating violence. This is a fiscal sponsor project by the San Diego Asian Film Foundation.

Summary: The purpose of this program is to support projects that improve the physical condition of community spaces and facilities. Projects may repair/refurbish, weatherize, and increase energy efficiency in the residences of low-income individuals or military veterans. In addition, projects may plant trees or community gardens, and landscape community facilities that serve veterans. Priority will be given to housing projects that serve veterans.
Eligible costs include tools, materials, and project-related services.

Second Chance Act
Eligible applicants are limited to states, territories, units of local government (including federally recognized Indian tribal governments, as determined by the Secretary of the Interior).
The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) recently released the solicitation for Second Chance Act grant applications to state and local governments and federally recognized Indian tribes for juvenile reentry demonstration projects. This funding is available to help jurisdictions develop and implement programs and strategies to reduce recidivism and ensure safe and successful reentry of juveniles released from prisons, jails, and juvenile detention facilities back to the community. The deadline for submitting an application is May 14, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Wednesday Night Car Shows & Friday Night Concerts Coming Soon!
The Downtown El Cajon Promenade District have announced the 2012 season for the Cajon Classic Cruise car shows and Concerts on the Promenade!  The first Cajon Classic Cruise car show will begin with Opening Night on Wednesday, April 25th, on downtown's Main Street. Ceramics Art Exhibit At Grossmont College
Grossmont College's Hyde Art Gallery is currently presenting "Beyond the Limit," a ceramics exhibit with works by Kelly Berning, Yoonchung Kim and Sasha Koozel Reibstein.  This exhibition, through April 12, features 42 pieces, including two-foot-high dancing tea pots that resemble human forms, and ceramic boxes with the history of ceramics in the Korean language.  Admission to the exhibit is free. The Hyde Art Gallery is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays, and 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. El Cajon Police to Host Prescription Drug Drop Off Site
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has scheduled another "National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day" which will take place on Saturday, April 28, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  The El Cajon Police Department, working in conjunction with DEA, will be hosting a prescription drug drop off site in the parking lot of the El Cajon Police Station, located at 100 Civic Center Way, in El Cajon. Aging & Independence Services (AIS) is holding the Live Well, San Diego! Summit: Building a Healthy Community for All Ages on June 15th; this event was called Aging Summit in previous years.  This year, we are expanding the focus of the Summit to include all ages – and will work to find ways that generations (old and young) can work together to come up with solutions for the health and social problems in our communities.  Making healthy choices and creating living environments that encourage safe, active lifestyles is important for all ages – and solutions should involve us all.  Participants of the Live Well, San Diego! Summit will explore using similar inter-generational approaches to solve our community problems and needs.

Hoarding Research Opportunities - Free Treatment Available for 18+
San Diego is fortunate to currently have two nationally recognized experts on hoarding research and treatment- Catherine R. Ayers, Ph.D., ABPP and Sanjaya Saxena, M.D.
Through current research grants, they are able to offer free treatment for persons with hoarding behaviors. Please note that these are not County-funded services thus the “Specialty Mental Health Services” criterion does not apply. However, some studies have limited services or are for a specific age group or hoarding sub-type.
Participants will need to speak some English but can be from anywhere in San Diego - as long as they are willing to drive to the UTC area.

RFP: Dementia Support Program
The County of San Diego’s Health and Human Services Agency’s Aging & Independence Services Division is seeking a contractor to provide supportive services to persons with dementia through the use of a volunteer-based program for those who need assistance remaining at home.  These services will include but are not limited to intensive case management, encompassing a broad range of services and supports, legal advocacy, financial management, health management and social connectedness to ensure that the clients served will safely age in place in the comfort of their home as opposed to being placed in a nursing home or senior care facility.

Free Online Health Literacy Course
Understanding the complex world of medical care is often a daunting challenge. The Health Resources and Services Administration is hosting free online health literacy training. The training, Unified Health Communication (UHC): Addressing Health Literacy, Cultural Competency, and Limited English Proficiency is free, on-line, go-at-your-own-pace training that has helped more than 4,000 health care professionals and students improve patient-provider communication.Take the course any time, night or day, to improve your ability to communicate with patients and overcome barriers that can keep patients from taking their medications according to your instructions, going to the emergency room when they would be better served in primary care or otherwise preventing them from getting the full benefit of the quality care you provide.Medically underserved patients may have particular difficulty communicating with their health care providers. If you treat patients who are low income, uninsured, and/or whose English proficiency is low, Unified Health Communication can help you:
1. Acknowledge cultural diversity and deal sensitively with cultural differences that affect the way patients navigate the health care system,
2. Address low health literacy and bridge knowledge gaps that can prevent patients from  adhering to prevention and treatment protocols, and

RFP: Sustainable Communities Planning Grant and Incentive Program 2011

The program has released the Round II Sustainable Communities Planning Grant Request for Proposals (RFP) funded through the Safe Drinking Water, Water Quality and Supply, Flood Control, River and Coastal Protection Act of 2006 (Proposition 84). ($18 million). The funds awarded will support development, adoption, and implementation of Sustainable Community planning elements throughout the State, including, but not limited to, Climate Action Plans and General Plan amendments. The grants awarded from this solicitation will cover up to a three-year project period.  Grant requests for amounts from $100,000 to $1,000,000 will be considered.
All applicants submitting proposals for funding through this grant must submit a complete electronic application using the FAAST system, by 5:00 P.M. on Wednesday, FEBRUARY 15, 2012. Late applications will not be accepted.
